What I'm listening to - speak wisely

What I’m listening to – Rick Hanson on Speaking Wisely

The day had been a disaster and it was only 10am.

I’d been noticeably frustrated in a meeting, and my children might have heard me raise my voice once or twice. When I finally wrangled myself to the next thing on my to-do list – complete a meditation – I found it was Rick Hanson on Speaking Wisely.

Rick Hanson is a neuropsychologist whose books include (the brand new release) Resilient, Hardwiring Happiness and Buddha’s Brain. His writings and podcasts can be found at https://www.rickhanson.net/.

He offers the following ‘check list’ for wise speech:

1. Is your communication well-intended?

2. Is what you are saying true?

3. Is it beneficial? Does your communication move the greater good (including you) forward?

4. Is your communication ‘clean’ in terms of its tone?

5. Is it timely?

6. Is it wanted – that is, does the other person want to hear it?

When have you spoken wisely today? Are there times when your communication was less-than-wise?

What are the mindsets and habits that help you stay in the wise speech zone?
